Ten year-old Yasmin Majewski lives just outside of London, however she has friends and relatives in Poland, and spends her school holidays there. Yasmin gives Discover Poland readers unique insight into what Poland has to offer its younger visitors.
“Since all of my family comes from Kraków, I get to travel there quite frequently – it’s a great city! Everyone knows that Kraków is full of beautiful old buildings, universities, castles and palaces. These maybe don’t sound like the kind of thing that would inspire the average ten year-old, however Kraków and the rest of the region, Małopolska has plenty of action for all the family.
Małopolska is great at this time of year because there is plenty of opportunity to go skiing – and let’s face it, skiing is a whole lot of fun! Zakopane is probably the most famous ski resort in Poland, and the slopes there - Kasprowy Wierch, Nosal and Szymoszkowa are very popular. Sometimes, they can be a bit too popular, because there is often lots of traffic on the road from Kraków to Zakopane. I prefer to ski in some of the smaller places, like Białka, Czorsztyn Ski, Krynica and Korbielów. The slopes in those places are great, the food is delicious and - best of all – it is floodlit, which means that you can ski late into the night.
After a day on the slopes, there is nothing better than kicking off your ski boots and heading to Kraków’s Market Square. My favourite café there is Arlekin – I love to sit outside with a big mug of hot chocolate and a slice of cake, and watch the street entertainers juggle fire, listen to musicians, and look at the city lights. It is really so beautiful. If you are lucky, you will catch a concert or some crazy fashion show in the Market Square. Kraków is great for theatres – there is one theatre that is especially for children, which is called Groteska. The plays at Groteska are lots of fun because they are very interactive and everyone in the audience can get involved.
It is also worth exploring some of the towns and villages outside of Kraków. For instance, my grandmother lives in Piekary which is best known for its swimming pool. It has a slide and a special pool for children – I could easily spend all day there! Children from all over Europe go there for summer camp, and everyone always has a good time. On the subject of swimming pools, don’t forget that there is the Aqua Park in Kraków. It has four gigantic slides, climbing frames and even rocks. It is completely different to any swimming pool that I have ever been to at home in England, and so much fun.
Poland is a great country for children to visit – there is just so much to experience, and there is never a dull moment.
