The spotlight was firmly fixed on Poland during October 2008, as news channel CNN took a closer look at Poland, a country that it considers to be “a driving force in the new Europe with a skilled workforce spreading its influence beyond its borders and an economy increasingly attractive to foreign investors.”

Regular visitors to Poland who happened to be watching CNN between 6-12 October 2008, would have recognised some familiar sights as Solidarity Avenue, the Chopin Monument, and the Palace of Culture and Science provided some of the backdrops to Eye on Poland, a series of live broadcasts, special reports and interviews from the capital city hosted by news anchor, Fionnuala Sweeney.
The week-long focus on Poland incorporated a series of in-depth special reports by CNN reporters, each examining issues such as business, politics and popular culture. From examining Poland’s strategic relationships with the rest of Europe, to the Zloty’s strength against the dollar, the series also looked at Poland’s new role as a destination for migrant workers from India and the Ukraine, as well as finding out how Poland’s political landscape had developed since European Union and taking on an active role in NATO. The series also touched on the lighter side of life in Poland, offering a glimpse into popular culture and included an interview with pop star Natalia Kukulska .
CNN encouraged viewers to get involved in Eye on Poland, by encouraging input both on-air and online. Viewers both within and outside Poland were invited to share their views, making the series completely interactive. The response was phenomenal, with many responding by submitting photographs and video clips, which can be seen alongside the main broadcasts and interviews on www.cnn.com
The series was both engaging and informative, and above all placed Poland on the map as a nation with a promising future. CNN has focused its “Eye On…” series France, Russia, India, South Korea, China, South Africa, Brazil and Lebanon, however Poland is the first country in Central Europe to be subject of the week-long special study.
