An opportunity to enjoy a gourmet meal in a historic palace or stately home is not one to be passed up – and when the restaurant dates back to 1364 and has welcomed Nobel Prize winners, royalty, heads of state and Oscar winners, you can be sure of a memorable experience.
Located on the Market Square in the beautiful city of Kraków, the Wierzynek Restaurant is located in two historic houses. The house at number 15 belonged to the Pinocci family, originally from Italy, which lived in the house during the17th century. It is at the house, that the family entertained foreign heads of state that arrived in the former capital for coronation ceremonies. Subsequent centuries saw the house change hands, and sustain damage in a fire, yet the Renaissance ceilings were carefully preserved and can still be admired today. The house at number 16 is named after the Morsztyn family which inherited the house from Mikolaj Wierzynek, a well-known merchant, in the 15th century, though the house changed hands many times over the centuries that followed. In 1945, both houses were joined together to form the Wierzynek Restaurant as it is known today.
The historical connections to the Wierzynek Restaurant do not stop with the bricks and mortar of the building, however. Legend has it, that in 1364, a local merchant called Mikolaj Wierzynek hosted a feast in honour of the kings and emperors of Europe. The occasion was to celebrate the wedding of King Casimir the Great’s granddaughter, Elisabeth of Pomerania to Charles IV, The Holy Roman Emperor. Royalty from as far and wide as Cyprus, Denmark and Hungary are believed to have received the gold plates that they had eaten from as a commemorative gift. While the exact location of the feast is debated by Polish historians, the legend of the feast lives on, as the inspiration for the Wierzynek Restaurant.
More recently, the restaurant has welcomed many well-know names from the world of politics, including George Bush Senior and François Mitterrand. King Juan Carlos of Spain and Nobel Prize winners Lech Wałęsa and Yitzhak Rabin have dined at the restaurant, as have film directors Steven Spielberg, Peter Greenaway, actress Sophie Marceau, and model Kate Moss to name just some of the guests who have experienced the elegance and timeless charm of the restaurant.
In keeping with its historic surroundings, the cuisine served is has a rich Polish heritage. Guests can expect traditional dishes such as veal haunch marinated in white wine, suckling pig marinated and stuffed, and beef roulade served with buckwheat groats and warm beetroot salad, all of which are prepared by specialist chefs, under the watchful eye of Executive Chef, Marcin Sołtys. An expertly selected wine list compliments the dishes served.
